What they say about the new Chamberlain Guide to Birding Gauteng:

New! Review at 10 000 birds

19/12/2008

I received a copy of your new book yesterday and it is fantastic. You and Faansie are to be congratulated. As yet I have not had a chance to to go through it thoroughly but what I have read so far is excellent. There is a wealth of information in it and this book will most certainly be well used by me. I note you even have info on my home patch, Nelspruit, which I know so well and I cannot even fault it.

"....this guide is not only beautifully-presented (on high-gloss paper), not only packed with detailed and up-to-date information on a staggering 101 sites (82 in or within a two-hour drive of Jo’burg and Pretoria, and a further 19 “favourite weekend birding destinations”), not only illustrated with more than 300 color photos which include some 250 bird species (most of which are far better technically than the Bushveld Pipit I may have already mentioned once or twice), not only includes 96 original full-colour site maps - but this guide is written with such obvious passion and knowledge that it reads more like an encyclopaedic love-letter to the region and its avifauna than just a book about where to see some great birds...".

I was fortunate to attend the launch of Etienne Marais and Faansie Peacock's new book last night! What a great function, and what an incredible book. Congratulations to Etienne and Faansie, and to David Chamberlain (the sponsor of the book). I am very impressed with every aspect of this book: the text, the maps, the images! The bar for birding guides has once against been raised! Well done guys!

Dear Faansie and Etienne,

Congratulations on a successful launch last night. The book is superb.

I took the book to work today and showed it to my colleagues who are either non-birders or mildly into birding. Ten of them have asked me to obtain a copy for them......Interesting that even for non-birders the book is visually appealing and draws their attention to spots in Gauteng that they did not know about.

That should augur well for sales as I think the book will have a wider appeal than just for hard core local birders. It is also excellent for visiting birders.

I got my copy of this book at the launch yesterday afternoon and what a magnificent piece of work it is! I can hardly keep my eyes open this morning, having spent all of last night just paging through it.

I couldn’t think of anyone who’d be able to do a better job at this that Etienne and Faansie and huge congrats go out to them for a beautiful book with tons of useful information.

There can be no doubt that this book belongs on the shelf (more like bedside table) of every birder, experienced and beginner.

Well done Etienne and Faansie!
